Book Reviews for Free Minds

“Where the press is free, and every man able to read, all is safe.”

— Thomas Jefferson

PsyDef stands for psychological defense. Literacy is the antidote to the terror of screens, i.e., lobotomizing mass media consumption. It is the motivating conviction of this publication that the rapid decline in literacy rates is causing a decline in liberty, harmony, and cultural vitality around the world. Simply put: when we lose our literacy, we lose our freedom. Freedom is freedom of mind.

Philosophy of Reading

“Reading good books is like engaging in conversation with the most cultivated minds of past centuries who had composed them, or rather, taking part in a well-conducted dialogue in which such minds reveal to us only the best of their thoughts.”

— René Descartes

Reading literature is not like reading instructions in a manual: it is an active and creative activity. When we read well, we ask questions, form associations, imagine alternatives, etc. Every book is an invitation to think along with the writer. Reading is not an act of downloading information, but a process of creating an experience. We make books come alive. The better we can read, the more life we can breathe into books; and when you give your life to books, they give life back to you.
